Signs That You Need a Roof Replacement

Do you think that your home’s roof may be in need of replacement? Are you trying to squeeze another winter season out of your old roof? Here are some sure signs that it’s time to replace your roof.

Your Roof is Old

Even if your roof was installed by a high-quality roofing contractor, once it’s over 20 years old, there’s a good chance it needs to be replaced. If your roof is nearing this age, it’s at least time for a thorough inspection. Even if the roof looks fine to the untrained eye, it could have underlying issues due to age that could eventually lead to costly leaks.

Missing Shingles

If your roof has been repaired in the past, you may have sections of your roof at different stages of deterioration. The shingles may not exactly match either. A new roof can offer a sophisticated and neat appearance for your home and boost its curb appeal. Inexperienced roofers may opt to lay a new layer of shingles over the existing roof, but this practice can lead to shingles easily being stripped due to improper fastening. Most often, when there are missing shingles, it’s a result of multiple layers of shingles failing at once.

Roof Sagging

A sagging roof is one of the clearest signs that it’s time for an inspection and probably a replacement. Even if you don’t have visible leaks inside your home, a sagging roof is a sign that structural issues will follow. The issue could be a result of poor workmanship or a major structural problem with your home. It’s crucial to have your roof inspected if it’s sagging in spots.

Curling or Cracked Shingles

Visibly cracked shingles are typically a sign that your roof’s time is just about up. Cracks allow space for water to enter and wreak havoc, especially in the winter when water freezes into ice and expands. If you notice some cracks, you should contact a roofing contractor immediately.

Curling shingles are another sign that leaks are probably on the horizon. They typically curl upward causes a cup shape that collects ice and water. Missing roofing granules on the ground and in your downspouts are some other signs that your shingles are beginning to fails.

Moss, Algae, or Dark Spots

When a roof gets old, it can start to become a hospitable home for algae, moss, and worse, mold. Roofs that don’t receive much natural light can be prone to algae growth. In some cases, algae can be removed, but sometimes mold exists underneath, and it’s time for a replacement. Modern roofing shingles offer protection against these issues, but if your roof is older, watch out for growth on your roof.
