After a long winter with cold temperatures and harsh weather, your home needs some TLC. Most people focus on their home’s interior and spring cleaning, but the exterior of your home is likely in even worse condition at the end of winter. Exterior home maintenance will be unique to your home and the age of different areas of the home, but start with this checklist to get an idea of what needs to be done before spring is over.
Gutters
Your gutters should be cleaned at the beginning of every spring. Climb up and remove any leaves or debris that are in the gutter system. You should also run a hose down the roof into the gutter system to imitate rainfall and look for signs of leaks. Small leaks can be fixed with caulking and epoxy. If you’ve cleaned the gutters but water is still getting backed up, there might be some debris stuck in the downspout.
Roofing
While you’ve got your ladder out for the gutters, take the opportunity to remove debris from your roof too. As you’re cleaning off the roof, be on the lookout for signs of shingle damage. Shingles that are warped, missing, or cracked will need to be repaired or replaced. It’s usually best to leave roofing to an experienced professional, so don’t attempt roofing repairs on your own.
Siding
Siding can be damaged from the harsh winter weathers and temperature fluctuations throughout the year. Inspect your siding for crack, holes, and warping. Different types of siding require different maintenance. Damaged vinyl siding may be able to be repaired without a full replacement as long as you find the damage early. If you notice signs of moisture inside your home, such as peeling and cracking paint, your siding might need a total replacement to protect the integrity of your home.
Windows
Inspect each of the windows in your home. Start by cleaning the window and the window screen. If the screen has any holes, you can patch it using another piece of screen or replace the entire screen. If your windowsills have cracks, fill them in with caulking and then repaint the area to match the rest of the windowsill. You can also lubricate the window track to make for easy opening and closing throughout the warmer months.
